Three Blade Knives
Knives are listed by number of blades and in numerical order by handle material (first digit) and the last three digits of the six digit pattern number. The multiblade knives are not photographed to scale, but to optimize viewing within a 3" x 3" frame. Smaller knives appear larger than actual size, larger knives appear smaller than actual size.

A quite notable American knife expert and prolific writer has stated that, other than the "Orange Blossom" gunstock lobster with a whittler blade configuration on top, true gunstock whittlers do not exist. The Robeson 632374 above right is a true whittler. There are two split backsprings. The Master spear rides on both springs and the pen and file blades each ride on one spring. I do not know which other manufacturers made a gunstock whittler, but Robeson certainly did. Indeed, there is another below; the 733466 pearl watch fob knife with bail. Although it is only 2 1/2" in length, it is configured in the whitller fashion.

The two knives above are illustrative of the transition from MasterCraft to Perma-Lube knives. As previously stated in Knife Gallery IV, after 1948 and under the direction of Emerson Case, the bronze bearing was moved from the end of the blade tang to the inner surface of the backspring. Perma-Lube knives had a bronze shield on the handle. The knife above right is etched, "PERMA-LUBE OILESS BEARING"

Note the chisel or gouge type secondary blade on the "WoodCraft" knife above right. The etch on the master clip blade is done in the form of logs put together to spell the word "WoodCraft". Robeson made this knife with two blades, as well. The two blade 622875 had the etched clip master blade in one end and the chisel/gouge blade opposite. Both knives were made in the "PocketEze" style with the backs of the blades flush with the knife's frame to reduce pocket wear.

Silver Toned Gentleman's Knife with Key Blank Instruction tag for exchanging key blanks
Neither of the two knives above have a pattern number, however, an identical knife sold on Ebay in May, 2007, for $192.00. That knife had a long pull on the spear blade, indicating an older knife, and it had the pattern number 539773 stamped onto the back of the master blade. Evidently, the key blank was counted as a blade, as the second digit of that pattern number indicates three blades.
These knives contained a Yale key blank, that are thought to have matched Yale Post Office box locks. One could return the knife to a designated locksmith, Mr. W. J. Hanna, in Attleboro, MA with their P.O.box key, and he would fit their key to the knife without charge.

The 742082 Pearl handled gunstock lobster whittler above right was an exceptional find in its original box with the factory guaranty. The knife is nicely etched with the Masonic symbol. This knife is just pristine mint, The haziness at the end of the master blade is a reflective phenomenon, This was, quite possibly, the most expensive knife Robeson ever produced.
